What Is the ATM Cave?
.
Actun Tunichil Muknal is both a natural cave system and an important Maya archaeological site. Deep inside the cave are ceramics, ceremonial areas and human remains left by the ancient Maya.
.
Unlike a traditional archaeological site where artifacts have been removed and placed behind museum glass, much of what you encounter inside ATM remains where it was discovered.
.
Visiting ATM Cave is therefore much more than a cave tour. It is a physical journey into an archaeological site that provides a remarkable look at ancient Maya ritual practices, beliefs and their relationship with caves and the underworld.
.
What to Expect on Your ATM Cave Tour
.
Your adventure begins with an early pickup from San Ignacio followed by the drive toward the ATM Cave reserve.
.
After arriving at the trailhead, your guide will provide a safety briefing before beginning the approximately 1.5 mile jungle hike to the cave entrance. The trail is mostly flat and includes three river crossings.
.
Reaching the cave is only the beginning.
.
You will enter through the water and spend approximately 2.5 hours exploring the cave system. The journey includes swimming, walking through water ranging from ankle to chest depth, navigating around rocks and completing several manageable climbs with guidance from your ATM certified guide.
.
Approximately 500 meters into the cave, the experience changes dramatically as you climb from the river passage into the dry archaeological chambers.
.
Shoes are removed before entering this sensitive area, and you continue in socks while your guide explains the artifacts, Maya history, ceremonies and archaeological discoveries surrounding Actun Tunichil Muknal.
.
Among the most famous discoveries is the human skeleton commonly known as the Crystal Maiden.
.
After exploring the archaeological chambers, you make your way back through the cave and jungle before enjoying lunch.
.
How Difficult Is the ATM Cave Tour?
.
ATM Cave is an active adventure, but you do not need to be an athlete or an experienced caver.
.
Guests should be comfortable walking over uneven terrain, entering water, swimming short distances and completing some climbing and scrambling inside the cave.
.
Your guide will explain where to place your hands and feet during more technical sections and assist guests when necessary.
.
If you are unsure whether ATM Cave is suitable for your age, swimming ability or physical condition, contact us before booking. We would rather help you make the right decision than place you on an experience that is not appropriate for you.
.
Do I Need to Know How to Swim?
.
Strong swimming skills are helpful but are not required for every section of the tour.
.
The entrance includes a deeper pool, and other sections of the cave range from shallow water to approximately chest depth. Your guide remains with the group and can provide additional assistance to less confident swimmers.
.
Please tell us before the tour if you are not a confident swimmer so we can prepare accordingly.
.
What Should I Wear to ATM Cave?
.
Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting completely wet.
.
We recommend:
.
* T shirt or lightweight athletic shirt
* Shorts
* Secure footwear with good grip
* Socks for the archaeological chamber
.
Your footwear is particularly important. Crocs and very soft water shoes are not recommended. Secure closed front sandals or suitable hiking or athletic footwear with good traction are better choices.
.
What Should I Bring?
.
Bring a change of clothes for after the tour and a reusable water bottle for the trailhead.
.
Backpacks are not carried through the cave, and cameras and mobile phones are not permitted inside ATM Cave.
.
Please avoid applying sunscreen or insect repellent immediately before entering the cave, as protecting the cave environment is an important part of responsible visitation.
.
Why Visit ATM Cave Early?
.
We intentionally depart San Ignacio early.
.
ATM Cave is one of Belize’s most popular adventure experiences, and arriving earlier can mean fewer groups on the trail and inside the cave. A quieter cave makes it easier to hear your guide, appreciate the archaeology and experience the atmosphere of the site.
.
We believe ATM deserves to be experienced as an archaeological and sacred site rather than simply another busy tourist attraction.
.
